What This Review Is Looking
At:
Price and Cost Effectiveness, Data Center, Connectivity,
Customer Service;
General Impressions:
Pros:
- No Setup Fee
- Solid CPanel / Fantastico Setup
- Multiple Domains
Cons:
- One plan wonder
- Long pre-pays
Cost Vs. Features & Support:
A more recent entry into the one-plan wonder set
of hosts, Techhosting provides a solid, affordable
hosting platform. Their one hosting package
provides pretty much anything a personal, hobby,
or blog site would need starting out. They use
the "Web 2.0" buzzword on their site, but ultimately
they don't have anything significantly different
from most hosts who are going with a CPanel
+ Fantastico setup.
They provide multiple websites, a
feature we always like. They limit you to 7 domains
currently, which should be more than enough to
satisfy anyone who has a modest domain portfolio.
Most users at this level are more than happy with
one website. Unlimited email accounts are included
as well, another nice addition. The Fantastico
script pack is useful, as always, as it has something
that will meet the needs of most anyone, from blogging
tools to image galleries and forums.
Ecommerce:
Though perhaps not the best Ecommerce platform,
Techhosting does provide a crop of open source
shopping cart solutions, mostly via the Fantastico
script pack. Included are Agora, CubeCart, Zen
Cart, and osCommerce. Basically the "usual suspects"
as far as free carts go. OsCommerce is a good
choice in terms of maturity and flexibility,
but feel free to explore other cart options
as well. Also, keep in mind this kind of host
really isn't the best place for serious ecommerce.
Servers and Connectivity:
Techhosting keeps your sites safe with multiple
levels of power backups, NetZentry DDOS attack
protection, firewalls, and climate controls.
This covers most of your common threats, both
physical and digital, and is an impressive security
suite for a budget hosting company.
Customer Service:
They do provide detailed support via online, chat,
and phone avenues. This is an area in which they
excel, as such open support isn't as common these
days for a budget hosting service. It's certainly
an impressive addition to a reasonably priced service,
and one you shouldn't discount if you're looking
at competing hosting companies with lower levels
of support.
